Which Pet is really “Bad to the Bone”?

Cottages of Hope is interested in finding out which animal rules, and which animal drools. Each has their strengths and financial issues, but which is “Bad” enough to avoid going to prison for a good cause? In order to find out we have added one Cat and one Dog to the list of prisoners in our Debtors’ Prison fundraising event:

Oscar-

Weighing in at a mere 18lbs he is wanted for demanding the premium brand food and fluffy pillows to sleep on while his owner is strapped for cash, causing her to use payday loans to keep him comfortable and with a belly full of food. With all of that, he is definitely the best companion a person could have. You’ve got to love cats!

Jenna–

Weighing in at a whopping 15 lbs, she is wanted for chewing on toilet paper, tissue, and children’s clothing. Oh, and her flying leap off the couch cost a lowly $400 to fix. Her owners have had to dip into their emergency savings, but she is still considered part of the family. Isn’t she cute!

Debtors’ Prison – Starting Line-Up

We are a very excited to roll-out our initial list of Debtors’ Prisoners.

The individuals you see below have been accused of caring too much about financial literacy and their community. These individuals along with several others have turned themselves in for a good cause and need to your help to raise their bail.

You can help by clicking here, Most Wanted, selecting your favorite inmate, and making a contribution to Cottages of Hope. Funds raised during the Debtors’ Prison will be used to support our ongoing financial literacy and coaching for low-income families in Weber County.

“Stretch Your Bucks…Without Breaking Your Back”

This four part series covers the basics of good financial money management and also meets the first requirement for the “Individual Development Account” (IDA) matched savings program.

Ogden Standard: “Cottages of Hope supports AmeriCorps Week”

OGDEN – The forth annual AmeriCorps Week is being held the week of May 8th. Throughout the week AmeriCorps members, alums, and program partners, are encouraged to inspire more Americans to get involved and better their community.

The AmeriCorps program is a network of national service groups that strives to meet crucial needs in America. These needs include education, public safety, fighting poverty, health concerns, and protecting the environment.

Cottages of Hope partners with many AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers. AmeriCorps VISTA and Cottages of Hope’s main focus is fighting poverty throughout America, and more specifically in the Ogden Community. VISTA was founded in 1965 as Volunteers in Service to America. It was later incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993 and has been a leader in the fight against poverty in America for more than 40 years.

“As an AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer at Cottages of Hope in Ogden, Utah, I have been inspired by the organization’s significant efforts and effective success,” said Kay Thompson Volunteer Coordinator and AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer at Cottages of Hope. “I have been involved in the development of the Prosperity Center Computer Lab that offers free job search, resume building, computer skills development, keyboarding skills, and educational assistance. I am very proud to say that I was a small part of this dream becoming a reality.”

Research shows that individuals who participate in AmeriCorps have a positive and life long influence on their community. AmeriCorps is a stepping stone to a career in public service and creates leaders throughout the community.

“As a 60-yr-old VISTA, I am impressed by the generosity and dedication of what’s often called the ‘give me generation’ to donate up to three years of their lives to AmeriCorps,” said Pam Parkinson, AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer at Cottages of Hope. “The opportunity to help those less fortunate is the greatest self-building experience there is. It gives balance to one’s life and in light of our present social and economic situation, balance is needed. I appreciate the opportunity to help expand VISTA’s mission.”

AmeriCorps invites anyone interested in getting involved in AmeriCorps week by volunteering in a fun and rewarding way, to come plant pumpkin seeds at the Oasis Community Garden from 10 AM until 1 PM on May 12th. The pumpkins are being planted to provide jack-o’-lanterns to Ogden children for Halloween. You will also receive free pumpkin seeds to take home and plant for your family. The Oasis Community Garden in located at 2580 Jefferson Ave in downtown Ogden.

Bank of Utah Volunteers work with Cottages of Hope to net Local Families $920,000 in Tax Refunds

OGDEN, Utah, March 1, 2010 – Nothing bites more for cash-strapped families than having to come up with additional money for income taxes. That’s why Bank of Utah volunteers have been providing free income tax preparation and advice for low-income families through Ogden’s Cottages of Hope. The locally-owned bank reported completing nearly 455 tax returns and generating $920,000 in total tax refunds, thus far this season.

“We have a great team of 26 people from our bank staff, including everyone from mortgage loan specialists to trust officers, who regularly volunteer at Cottages of Hope,” said Scott Parkinson, Bank of Utah’s senior vice president of retail banking. “Together they have put in nearly 651 hours screening individuals and preparing taxes. We hope our services are providing a lift for community members who may be struggling financially.”

Bank of Utah and Cottages of Hope estimate that they have saved their patrons nearly $80,000 total or an average of $180 per tax return.

Bank of Utah employees also volunteer their time teaching financial literacy classes at Cottages of Hope. The local nonprofit agency focused on helping Ogden residents work toward achieving greater levels of financial stability, recently opened a new “one-stop” resource and referral center.
