Which Pet is really “Bad to the Bone”?

Cottages of Hope is interested in finding out which animal rules, and which animal drools. Each has their strengths and financial issues, but which is “Bad” enough to avoid going to prison for a good cause? In order to find out we have added one Cat and one Dog to the list of prisoners in our Debtors’ Prison fundraising event:

Oscar-

Weighing in at a mere 18lbs he is wanted for demanding the premium brand food and fluffy pillows to sleep on while his owner is strapped for cash, causing her to use payday loans to keep him comfortable and with a belly full of food. With all of that, he is definitely the best companion a person could have. You’ve got to love cats!

Jenna–

Weighing in at a whopping 15 lbs, she is wanted for chewing on toilet paper, tissue, and children’s clothing. Oh, and her flying leap off the couch cost a lowly $400 to fix. Her owners have had to dip into their emergency savings, but she is still considered part of the family. Isn’t she cute!

Debtors’ Prison – Starting Line-Up

We are a very excited to roll-out our initial list of Debtors’ Prisoners.

The individuals you see below have been accused of caring too much about financial literacy and their community. These individuals along with several others have turned themselves in for a good cause and need to your help to raise their bail.

You can help by clicking here, Most Wanted, selecting your favorite inmate, and making a contribution to Cottages of Hope. Funds raised during the Debtors’ Prison will be used to support our ongoing financial literacy and coaching for low-income families in Weber County.

Debtors’ Prison Fundraiser

A History of Debtors’ Prison – Prior to the mid-19th century debtors’ prisons were a common way to deal with unpaid debt. Both men and women were locked up together in a single large cell until their families and friends paid their debt. (The Consumer Reporter; Aug. 2009)

We Need Your Help – As you know, Cottages of Hope’s programs and services provide individuals and families with the tools they need to avoid the modern-day debtors’ prison. Our Debtors’ Prison for Prosperity annual fundraiser supports our mission of increasing financial education and independence in our community. The prisoner is obviously at the heart of this event, so we are seeking individuals that enjoy having fun while supporting a good cause.

How it Works – Participants will be asked to set their bail (donation level) and reach out to their network (family, friends, coworkers, etc.) to raise bail by Thursday, July 28th in order to avoid doing time at the Debtors’ Prison Party on Friday, July 29th. Don’t be afraid of lock-up, the warden has done everything she can to make your stay enjoyable! The Debtors’ Prison Party is our way of saying thank you for your support, attendance is optional but we hope you come and meet the other prisoners. For those hesitant about asking for donations, don’t worry! Cottages of Hope will provide volunteers with the information and tools they need to successfully raise funds and have fun at the same time.

“Stretch Your Bucks…Without Breaking Your Back”

This four part series covers the basics of good financial money management and also meets the first requirement for the “Individual Development Account” (IDA) matched savings program.

Classes start Thursday, September 2nd from 6 to 8 PM and then continue every Thursday through the 23rd. To enroll in the class call (801) 393-4011.

We are pleased to announce that EnableUtah, a local nonprofit, has agreed to provide our safe and secure document shredding during our June 2nd Identity Theft Prevention Open House. To learn more about EnableUtah, click here.

The Scope Center at Mound Fort Jr High and Cottages Of Hope are Co-Sponsoring a

“Financial Fitness Fair”

Friday, January 28th from 6:00 to 8:30 PM

1396 Liberty Avenue, Ogden Utah

The fair will include resource booths, presentations, free food, prizes, carnival games, & entertainment.

Resource Booths will provide information on banking, financial/debt counseling, free tax preparation, saving tips, good nutrition (on a budget), healthy lifestyles, career & education resourses, shelter & utility assistance, and weatherization education.

Financial Presentations will focus on “Becoming Properly Banked” and “The Wise Use of Credit”
